Some people don’t consider re-roofing improvements to be important. In fact, they even forget about their roofs when they plan on upgrading the exterior of the house. But roof upgrade, improvements, or repairs are essential. We list here some upgrades you can do to make your roof more functional, lovelier, and more enduring.

  1. Eave Flashing

Installing eave flashing is important especially if you have been through the experience of getting damage from an ice dam. These are actually easy to install because you only need to peel them then stick them on. They should be applied before shingling. The depth should be 2 feet within the exterior plane wall. These membranes seal themselves around the roof fasteners. This will create a watertight closure over the eaves. Eaves are the ones easily damaged due to ice dams. Installing an eave flashing will help protect the eave.

       2. Roof Ventilation

During summer, the attic will feel like a furnace and the rest of the house like a conventional oven. If your room is near or the attic itself, if it doesn’t have proper ventilation, then chances are that you’ll be a well-done meat in a short time. The attic temperature can actually affect that of the whole house. If it is hot up there, the other room and spaces will feel the same. To regulate the temperature, have ridge vents installed by your roofing contractor. If you’re worried that they’ll be obvious, don’t worry because they won’t be from afar. Ridge vents will provide proper air movement. To make the ventilation more efficient, soffit vents and gable vents may also be installed.

       3. Chimney Cap

If you have a chimney, consider having an airtight chimney cap installed. Metal caps are good for keeping rain, birds, or lizards or just about any animal that would fit. Airtight caps, on the other hand, are for energy efficiency.

When the weather is cold and you are not using your fireplace, warm air from the house is welling up to escape the chimney. If it does successfully escape, then you will still freeze inside. Contact your roofer for more information about this and if you want one to be installed. Airtight caps are also useful for hindering small animals and insects from making a residence in the chimney.

      4. Gutters

Opt for low-maintenance gutters. They work better in adhering water and enabling rainwater to fall down and into the gutter all the while redirecting leaves. Because of this, you will no longer about them getting stains and clogging. And, the most important thing is that you don’t have to climb just to clean them.

      5. Shingles

Light-colored shingles will allow for cooler roofs. But most people agree that they don’t look appealing and attractive. Today, reflective shingles are available. They reflect back the sun’s light and heat. Although it defers on your house’s construction, but cool roofs save you a good 7-15% of your cooling system costs.
